BMW Berlin Marathon 1994: 21st edition, 12,263 finishers
At the 21st Berlin Marathon on 25 September 1994, German star Katrin Doerre-Heinig won the women's race in 2:25:15, her third German record over the distance.
What made 1994 notable
The defining story of 1994 was a home win for Katrin Doerre-Heinig, the only German woman to win an Olympic marathon medal. She crossed in 2:25:15, her third German record over the distance, in the same season she completed a hat-trick of London Marathon victories. The men's race went to Antonio Pinto of Portugal in 2:08:31, the future London champion announcing himself on a fast Berlin course. A field of 12,263 finished, 10,980 men and 1,283 women, a reminder of how much smaller the race was before the modern lottery era. For ballot watchers, 1994 predates the application draw entirely: entry was open, not balloted.
